Morse Code Audio Quiz

A Morse code audio quiz plays authentic dot and dash beep tones and asks you to identify the corresponding character. Unlike a visual quiz where you see the dots and dashes, an audio quiz trains your ear — the skill needed for real radio communication. This quiz uses the Web Audio API to generate ITU-accurate sine wave tones with shaped attack and release envelopes, eliminating the clicking artifacts common in basic Morse code audio tools.

Start at 5 WPM (Beginner difficulty) and use Farnsworth spacing. At 5 WPM you can carefully count each beep. Once you can identify most characters without counting — typically after 2–4 weeks of daily 5-minute sessions — move to 10 WPM. The ham radio Technician licence in most countries requires 5 WPM recognition. Comfortable CW operation starts at 13–15 WPM. Elite operators reach 25–35 WPM. There is no shortcut — daily ear training at gradually increasing speed is the only path.

Farnsworth timing plays each individual character at the rhythm of 15 WPM — so E sounds like a single quick beep and W sounds like a short-long-long at the correct speed. But it adds extra spacing between characters, giving you more time to think. The ARRL (American Radio Relay League) and most CW instructors recommend Farnsworth because it trains your ear to hear the correct gestalt shape of each character rather than counting individual beeps — counting is a habit that becomes a ceiling, limiting your speed later. Enable it in Settings, use it for your first month.

The default is 600 Hz, which is the most commonly used frequency for Morse code practice and matches what many CW operators use on air. Move the slider and the tone previews immediately. Use 500–600 Hz if you find the default too sharp. Use 700–800 Hz if 600 Hz is hard to hear (age-related high-frequency hearing loss affects many adults). Avoid frequencies above 900 Hz for extended sessions — they cause ear fatigue faster.

Q-codes (QSO, QTH, QRM, etc.) are played as Morse code beeps — you hear the letters Q, S, O as individual characters in sequence. The four answer choices are meanings ("Direct radio contact", "My location is", etc.). This tests whether you can both decode the letters by ear and know the operational meaning — exactly the two skills needed for on-air CW use. Q-code questions only appear in the Advanced level.

Yes. All audio is generated in your browser using the Web Audio API — no audio files are downloaded. Once the page loads, the quiz works completely offline. Your progress and weak spot data are saved in localStorage and persist between sessions without any server connection.
